Math Challenge on Wednesday with Miss Deacon - Create a cube(using a net) with the biggest volume using an A4 sheet of paper.  Some interesting outcomes and thinking - great discussions going on.

Well done to our fabulous boys group who raised $301,30 cents on Saturday the 15th October.  We arrived about 10:45 and Ryan greeted us at the Warehouse door.  Steve and the boys got the BBQ going and the boys soon worked out their own system of who did what.  By 2 0' clock all the sausages had been sold which was great, as after we had packed up it poured down!!

A group of Havelock North Intermediate students now know what it's like to trek for water.
Room 6, led by Karen Stephenson, yesterday walked from the school gates on Nimon St in Havelock North to civic square in Hastings. Then they walked back with their brightly coloured banners, an 11km round trip.
They were inspired by the recent gastro outbreak and a book they were studying for their "change makers" unit.
Long Walk to Water was about Salva, one of the lost boys of Sudan, who had started a charity after his father became sick with a water-borne disease.
"Water for Sudan" raises money to build wells for villages around Sudan and the children in the class wanted to show their support.
"They wanted to raise $1000 so we have planned a series of fundraisers to help build a well."
The walk to the civic square was so they could experience what it was like towalk a long distance every day to get this vital element.
"After many of them were sick from the water in Havelock North, it only strengthened their resolve to try to bring change for the people in Sudan," Ms Stephenson said.
"Room 6 and parents were incredible, making it all the way to Hastings and back. I am proud to be their teacher."

In class we are looking at Transformations this term and part of this has been working on enlargements.  As a class we were all given a piece of paper with a part of a picture. We had to enlarge it by a scale factor of 7 on a new piece of paper.  We then put them all together as a class to see how close we were to the original picture.

We are learning about the body systems in class at the moment.  Room 6 has had a focus on the circulatory system and so we made blood in class to understand how it works.

The red blood cells carry oxygen, and cause the plasma(yellow liquid) to turn red.  The white blood cells(leukocytes) are fewer than the red and are used for fighting disease(the immune system). Platelets are also part of the blood and help with the clotting wen your body has a wound.  They are like plugs in the blood vessels.

Rocket Science
Every Friday in Hillary hits we have been looking at 'Rocket Science' with the idea of exploring Newton's Third Law of Motion='For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction'.  We used balloons to help us to understand and observe the Third law of Motion.  Our variable was the type of balloon we used and we found that the shape/design of the balloon affected the outcome of the force in action(NTLM).

Some great work on place value with Mrs Houghton today.  Well done Pentagons!

Tuesday 23 February 2016

This Term our topic is 'Unity in Diversity'.  In the first few weeks we looked at defining identity and what it means to be "Me'.  We have also explored the idea of difference within our class and we filled out a compare and contrast chart with a partner in the class.  We had many aspects that were the same and some very different.  This week we are beginning to look at 'Community' and what it means to us.

Saturday 30 January 2016

Welcome to a great year of learning in Room 6.  My name is Mrs Stephenson and I have moved down from Rotorua to teach at Havelock North Intermediate.
I am looking forward to this year, it looks to be an interesting, action packed year and we will be on a 'new' journey together.  I am married with 3 girls of 19, 17 and 15, two grown up step children and an old, rather large, ginger cat!
Over the next few weeks we will be getting to know each other within the classroom, Hillary house and the school.
